Fans of Tim Burton’s iconic dark comedy Beetlejuice are in for a treat this September as the highly anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is poised to make a significant splash at the box office. Early tracking indicates the film could earn as much as $80 million during its opening weekend when it flies into theaters on September 6th.
Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, has offered a slightly more conservative estimate, suggesting an opening in the range of $65 million to $75 million. Regardless of the final number, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to become one of the most notable releases of the year, with the potential to captivate both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
This sequel reunites Tim Burton with Michael Keaton, who returns as the mischievous and unforgettable Beetlejuice. Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, while Catherine O’Hara also returns. Adding fresh faces to the mix, Jenna Ortega, a fan favorite, takes on the role of Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, alongside newcomers like Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.
The story picks up with Lydia Deetz and her family returning home after a tragedy, only to find themselves dealing with supernatural consequences when Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife. The teaser trailer, which dropped in March, has already created a buzz, featuring a memorable line where Beetlejuice, portrayed by Keaton, declares, “The juice is loose,” much to the astonishment of Ryder’s Lydia.
With a script crafted by Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and additional story work by Seth Grahame-Smith, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice promises to deliver the quirky humor and spooky thrills that made the original a cult classic. The 1988 film grossed $74 million at the box office, a figure that would amount to more than $195 million today when adjusted for inflation.
As the release date approaches, excitement continues to build for what could be one of the most memorable films of the year. Fans of the original and newcomers alike will no doubt flock to theaters to see the ghost with the most back in action.
