In a recent conversation with Variety, Maya Hawke addressed the inevitable “nepotism” comments that are expected to come her way, given her collaboration with her father Ethan Hawke in their upcoming film, Wildcat. The film explores the life of the Southern gothic writer Flannery O’Connor, with Maya embodying O’Connor and other characters from the author’s short stories. Ethan not only co-wrote but also directed the film.
Maya, known for her role in Stranger Things, admitted feeling a tinge of self-consciousness while working on this father-daughter passion project, owing partly to the perception of nepotism. Despite these insecurities, both father and daughter cherished their time working together, valuing their personal and professional relationship over the criticisms that may come their way. “We like being with each other,” Maya shared, emphasizing her father’s significant influence on her career.
Ethan, on his part, maintained a sense of humor about the situation, jokingly admitting to being a “nepo dad”. However, he firmly believes in Maya’s merit, highlighting her accomplishments and her right to be in the lead role. Maya brought forth the idea for Wildcat inspired by her deep admiration for O’Connor’s work, which started during her high school years. This admiration even influenced her successful audition for the prestigious Juilliard school.
Maya’s journey to this point wasn’t an overnight success. She built her confidence over the years, proving her mettle in high-profile projects such as Asteroid City and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, before feeling ready to share the spotlight with her renowned father.
The duo, unapologetic and proud of their collaborative effort, look forward to the premiere of Wildcat and continue to support each other in their respective journeys in the film industry. They believe in the quality of their work and encourage audiences to judge the movie on its merit rather than their familial connection.
Stay tuned for more updates on Wildcat and don’t miss Maya’s upcoming role opposite her mother, Uma Thurman, in the crime thriller The Kill Room later this month.
