Disney’s Snow White Remake Release Date Up in the Air Amid Backlash

NOTE: This article is 1 year old and may not include the most recent information.

UPDATE:

This update covers new speculation that Disney may postpone the release of its live-action Snow White remake, originally set for March 22, 2024.

Recent insider rumors indicate the delay may be due to:

  • Reshoots needed because of industry strikes
  • Growing backlash against casting choices and changes from the original story
  • Possibility of releasing directly to Disney+ instead of theaters

Our previous coverage focused on the crowded slate of March 2024 releases like Dune: Part Two that could force Disney to shift the date. However, these emerging reasons suggest more factors at play.

Disney has not confirmed changes to the release plan yet. But this controversial remake seems to face increasing uncertainties, even before its big screen debut.

Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, may miss its planned March 22, 2024 release date.

According to industry insider Matt Belloni, the film could shift dates due to the crowded slate in March 2024. Warner Bros. recently claimed Dune: Part Two on March 15, 2024, leaving little room for Snow White the following week.

Additionally, Deadpool 3 is slated for May 3, 2024 but may not make that deadline, potentially opening up that spot for Snow White after reshoots.

Zegler has faced backlash for her modern spin on Snow White. In an interview, she described the original 1937 Prince Charming as “a man who actively stalks her.” Her comments have ignited debate around updating versus honoring the iconic original.

While Disney remakes tend to do well, early feedback indicates polarized opinions on this controversial remake. Drastic changes could alienate fans, but copying the original may also underwhelm audiences.

Once a trailer premieres, perceptions could shift. For now, Snow White will likely move from its March release into a less crowded summer 2024 slot.
