M3GAN AMA: The Internet’s New Bestie Talks Favorite Robot Actors and Defeating Chucky and Annabelle

NOTE: This article is 1 year old and may not include the most recent information.

M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to protect and bond with young children, conducted a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” Q&A on Thursday to promote the Blumhouse horror-comedy. In the AMA session, M3GAN named her favorite robot actors (Johnny 5, Baymax, and RoboCop, obviously), and even took a stab at who would win should she ever have a killer playdate with fellow demon dolls Annabelle and Chucky.

The horror-comedy is produced by James Wan and Blumhouse, the creators of Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. M3GAN is about the titular android: a marvel of artificial intelligence programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.

M3GAN’s responses to questions about other killer dolls in the horror genre were particularly interesting. When asked if she could defeat Chucky and Annabelle in a fight, M3GAN confidently responded, “annabelle never moves, so i wouldn’t have to really lift a finger against her and chucky is old, so i’d just go right for his pacemaker.” She also had some choice words for Chucky, calling him a “middle aged white male whose soul is stuck in the body of an 80s toy” who “has trouble accepting that technology has come a long way.”

M3GAN is now playing in theaters, and according to the film’s protagonist, the android “optimally programmed to slay the dance floor” and “slaying is what [she] does best.” It will be interesting to see how audiences react to this new addition to the horror genre, and how M3GAN’s portrayal of artificial intelligence compares to other robot characters in pop culture.
