M3GAN, the upcoming killer doll movie produced by Jason Blum and James Wan, is generating buzz as its release date approaches in January 2023. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Blum was asked if M3GAN could potentially become the “beginning of another Insidious” for him and he responded, “I hope so. I mean, we don’t want to put the cart before the horse. But if a lot of people love the movie, I hope we can make more of them.”
One of the unique aspects of M3GAN is that the doll is powered by artificial intelligence rather than a supernatural entity, a gimmick that differentiates it from other killer doll films like Chucky and Annabelle. This adds a sense of realism and relevance to the film, as it touches on the growing presence of AI technology in the world.
The film stars Violet McGraw as Cady, a young girl who forms a bond with M3GAN after experiencing loss, and Allison Williams as Gemma, the toy-company roboticist who creates M3GAN. The cast also includes Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten.
In the official synopsis for the film, M3GAN is described as “a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally.” Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to help her navigate being an unprepared caretaker for her orphaned niece, but this decision has unforeseen consequences.
