Fans of the feathered franchise have something to chirp about: The Angry Birds Movie 3 has officially landed at Paramount Pictures, with a theatrical release slated for January 29, 2027. The announcement marks a new chapter for the beloved video game adaptation, which sees Rovio Entertainment and Sega teaming up to bring the animated comedy back to the big screen.

The third installment welcomes back familiar voices, with Jason Sudeikis reprising his role as the fiery Red, Josh Gad as the speedy Chuck, Rachel Bloom as the brainy Silver, and Danny McBride as the explosive Bomb. Joining the flock is an impressive lineup of newcomers, including Emma Myers (Wednesday), Keke Palmer (Nope), Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Lily James (Cinderella), Saturday Night Live standout Marcello Hernandez, Walker Scobell (The Adam Project), Sam Richardson (Veep), Anna Cathcart (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever), Nikki Glaser, James Austin Johnson, and even Psalm West, adding a fresh burst of talent to the ensemble.

Paramount Pictures has secured global distribution rights, taking the reins from Sony Pictures, which handled the first two films. The original Angry Birds Movie (2016) soared to a global box office haul of $352 million, while its sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), struggled with $147.8 million. Despite the second film’s dip, Rovio and Sega note that the franchise has collectively grossed over $500 million worldwide and found significant success on streaming platforms, fueling optimism for this latest outing.

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Paramount Pictures and extremely proud of our incredible cast,” said producer John Cohen in a statement. “Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Rachel, and Danny returning to voice their fantastic characters, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re so thrilled to have them all on board.”

Marc Weinstock, Paramount’s president of worldwide marketing and distribution, echoed the enthusiasm: “Angry Birds transcends mediums and has been embraced and celebrated the world over. We couldn’t be happier to be partnering with Sega/Rovio and these other great partners to bring this latest installment, featuring an incredible voice cast, to big screens everywhere.”

The film is a collaborative effort, produced by Rovio Entertainment, Sega, Prime Focus Studios (led by Namit Malhotra), Flywheel Media, One Cool Group, and dentsu. John Rice, director of the first film, returns to helm the project, working from a screenplay by Thurop Van Orman, who directed the sequel. Producers John Cohen, Dan Chuba, and Carla Connor are steering the production, with Grammy-winning composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) back to score the film.

DNEG Animation is handling storyboards, art development, and animation, with Jeanie Chang as production designer, Francesca Natale as character designer, Vadim Bazhanov as head of story, and Sarah K. Reimers as lead editor.

“We’re thrilled to announce that our first theatrical distribution partnership is with Paramount Pictures,” said Don McGregor, founder and CEO of Flywheel Media. “As a film production company focused on bringing the best family movies to global audiences, we couldn’t have a better start than The Angry Birds Movie 3.”

For Rovio Entertainment, the franchise’s evolution from a mobile gaming sensation to a cinematic staple is a point of pride. “The Angry Birds brand has demonstrated remarkable versatility, evolving from a global mobile gaming phenomenon to licensed products, animation, and a thriving cinematic franchise,” said CEO Alex Pelletier-Normand. “It has been a deeply collaborative effort to create a film that will resonate with the millions who interact with our catalog of games and products every day.”

The timing feels right for Angry Birds 3, especially following the blockbuster debut of Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie this past weekend and Paramount’s own success with the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise alongside Sega. With a proven track record and a powerhouse cast, this threequel aims to recapture the magic that made the original a global hit while welcoming a new generation of fans.
