Frights Beat Laughs at the Weekend Box Office as The Nun II Holds Off A Haunting in Venice

It was a close call, but the horror sequel The Nun II managed to scare up enough ticket sales to land in first place for the second weekend in a row. The latest chilling chapter in The Conjuring universe brought in $14.7 million domestically, bringing its total so far to $56.5 million in the US. With a #1 international debut of $30.1 million, The Nun II has now crossed the $100 million mark globally.

Giving it a fright was A Haunting in Venice, the new Agatha Christie adaptation starring Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot. The star-studded whodunit thriller conjured up $14.5 million, just falling short of the top spot by less than $250k. Set in post-war Venice, Branagh said the film focuses on the theme of the supernatural, with Poirot drawn to a séance in a haunted palazzo on All Hallows’ Eve.

In third place, The Equalizer 3 shot up another $7.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $73.7 million after three weeks. Despite a lackluster start, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 held on to fourth place, earning $4.7 million.

Rounding out the top five was summer blockbuster Barbie. Now in its ninth week, the doll-comes-to-life comedy racked up just under $4 million. Still the highest grossing film of 2022, Barbie has earned over $600 million in North America and a whopping $1.4 billion worldwide.

It seems moviegoers are seeking scares over laughs, as the horror films overpowered a mystery thriller, action sequel, romantic comedy, and even the hugely popular Barbie at the box office this weekend.
