In a recent Teen Vogue interview prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, 15-year-old actress Ariana Greenblatt gave an inside look at her experience portraying the anti-Barbie character Sasha in the new live-action Barbie film, now showing in theaters.

Greenblatt revealed how she organically formed a mother-daughter bond with co-star America Ferrera through bonding in London. She described how conversations over afternoon tea helped them create an authentic on-screen relationship.

Discussing Sasha’s change of heart, Greenblatt explained her thoughtful process researching Barbie’s cultural impact to inform Sasha’s journey. She realized Barbie’s influence is complex, leading Sasha to re-examine her staunch anti-Barbie stance. Greenblatt said exploring this character growth empowered her as an actress and person.

Greenblatt fondly recalled the joy of learning the dance routines, especially shooting the epic dance number which she cited as a favorite memory. She raved about the supportive camaraderie amongst the cast that created a fun, creative environment on set.

While praising the film’s impressive production value, Greenblatt stressed the importance of bringing emotional truth to Sasha. She focused on portraying Sasha’s evolution from judgmental to open-minded in a relatable way to resonate with audiences.

Through embodying Sasha’s transformation, Greenblatt gained perspective on not judging others or herself. She hopes the movie inspires audiences to look beyond stereotypes and embrace self-acceptance. For Greenblatt, playing Sasha reinforced the power of staying true to yourself.
