Get ready to rock once again with Sex Bob-omb as Netflix has announced a new Scott Pilgrim anime series, reuniting the cast from the beloved 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Michael Cera returns to voice the titular character, Scott Pilgrim, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead, reprising her role as Ramona Flowers. The star-studded lineup of returning cast members includes Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong. A year ago, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Netflix was developing the anime series.
The Scott Pilgrim franchise began as a graphic novel series written and illustrated by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Published by Oni Press in six volumes between 2004 and 2010, the story follows slacker and garage band member Scott Pilgrim. Filmmaker Edgar Wright adapted the series into the 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, where Scott faces off against Ramona Flowers’ seven evil exes. Despite its box office failure, the film gained a devoted cult following.
In a statement, Wright expressed his excitement about the project: “One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010, we’ve done Q&A’s, remembrances, and charity read-throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now…”
Bryan Lee O’Malley joins forces with writer BenDavid Grabinski to expand the Scott Pilgrim universe in the new anime series. O’Malley serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with Grabinski, known for Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark, also on board as a writer and executive producer. Edgar Wright serves as an executive producer as well.
The animation for the Netflix series is provided by renowned anime house Science SARU, directed by Abel Gongora. The series will feature original songs by Anamanaguchi and a score composed by Anamanaguchi and Joseph Trapanese. Fans of the original film and graphic novels have plenty to look forward to in this exciting new adaptation.
