Fans of the classic movie musical “Grease” are in for a treat with the upcoming prequel series, “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.” The show, set to debut on Paramount+ in 2023, takes place at Rydell High four years before Danny and Sandy’s summer romance and follows four high school outcasts as they band together to form the iconic girl gang, the Pink Ladies.
The series stars Jason Schmidt and Marisa Davila as Buddy and Jane, the predecessors to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s characters. The cast also includes Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, Tricia Fukuhara, Shanel Bailey, Madison Thompson, Johnathan Nieves, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, and Jackie Hoffman.
“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” will feature new original music written and executive produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Justin Tranter, known for his work with artists like Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga. Choreography for the musical numbers will be handled by Jamal Sims, known for his work on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
The show’s script was written by “Atypical” alum Annabel Oakes, who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Adam Fishbach and Marty Bowen, through their Temple Hill and Picturestart banners, will also serve as executive producers, along with Alethea Jones, who will direct the pilot and two additional episodes.
Paramount+ shared a teaser trailer for “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” on Twitter, giving fans a sneak peek at the iconic pink jackets and a brief clip of the show’s sounds. “Witness the rise,” the Paramount+ Twitter account commented. “Grease: #RiseOfThePinkLadies is coming to Paramount+ in 2023.”
