Ariana Greenblatt is taking on her first romantic comedy lead, and the news lands as a real milestone for a performer who has spent the last several years stacking one strong credit on top of another. Greenblatt is set to star in “Egg Baby,” a film from director Natalia Anderson and XYZ Films that Amazon MGM Studios has picked up for a worldwide release on Prime Video. The announcement broke Friday, June 19, and for anyone who has followed her run from scene-stealing child actor to one of the most reliable young performers working today, this one marks a notable step forward.

The premise leans into a fun, high-concept hook. Written by Sawyer Perry, “Egg Baby” follows a rebellious artist and a golden-boy quarterback who get assigned to co-parent an egg for health class, only to find that raising “Yolk-o” might change how they see each other. It is the classic opposites-attract setup, dressed up in a fresh and very funny coat of paint, and the type of story that works when the casting is right.

Behind the camera, the project carries real pedigree. Anderson, whose credits include “After So Many Days” and “The Craft: Legacy,” takes the director’s chair. XYZ Films produces alongside Allison Friedman, known for “The Mortuary Collection” and “The Fix,” in association with BuzzFeed Studios. That blend of indie sensibility and streaming reach feels right for a movie like this, something with enough personality to stand out and enough warmth to travel across borders.

For Greenblatt, the timing could hardly be better. She comes off the Lionsgate threequel “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” where she shared the screen with legacy cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and Isla Fisher. She is also known for her work in “Barbie,” “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” and “Borderlands,” and the slate keeps growing. Most recently, she signed on to star opposite Grace Van Patten in Hanna Gray Organschi’s debut feature “Rubber Hut.”

What makes “Egg Baby” worth circling on the calendar is the chance to watch Greenblatt headline a project of her own. She has already proven she can hold the screen against heavyweight ensembles and inside studio tentpoles, and carrying a film built around her is the natural next step. If the casting clicks the way the premise suggests it might, this could be the role that confirms her status as a lead, not just a standout in someone else’s movie.

No release window has been announced yet, though the film is set to land on Prime Video once it arrives. We will be following “Egg Baby” closely as casting fills out and a date comes into view.
