Sky Katz is heading to Tubi. The “Raven’s Home” and “Surviving Summer” star has been cast to headline “Game On,” a new YA romantic comedy from the free streaming platform, the company announced today. It is her first Tubi Original, and she is not just starring in it. Katz is also serving as an executive producer, a sign of how much creative ground she is claiming at this stage of her career.
The film centers on Casey, a competitive gamer who has spent years hiding behind a voice-modded online persona called ByteMe after enduring harassment in gaming spaces. When her high school launches its first esports tournament, Casey enters ready to win. The complication arrives when she discovers that her longtime online rival, a player known as ShadowGlitch, is actually Theo, a new classmate she is beginning to have real feelings for. Rather than come clean, Casey decides to keep her cover and use their budding romance to study his gameplay from the inside. The strategy, predictably, begins to fall apart as the feelings stop being fake.
Case Walker, best known from the comedy series The Other Two, plays Theo. Rounding out the cast is Nolan North, the voice acting legend behind the Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed franchises, who takes on the role of Casey’s father. It is a casting choice that will not be lost on the gaming community the film is squarely aimed at.
Jem Garrard wrote and directed the film, with production handled by Blue Ice Pictures. Lance Samuels and Garrard join Katz in the executive producer seats. Production is set to begin this month, with Tubi flagging “Game On” as a headline announcement at its IAB Newfronts presentation on March 24.
For Katz, the project is a meaningful step forward. The executive producer credit matters. So does the material. Casey is a character navigating identity, vulnerability, and the gap between who we perform ourselves to be and who we actually are. That is not a lightweight assignment, and based on everything Katz has brought to her previous work, it is one she appears more than ready for.
