The Ghostbusters franchise is officially expanding its reach into the world of animation once again. Sony Pictures Animation is moving forward with its highly anticipated animated Ghostbusters feature film, and the project has found its creative voice. Sam Jarvis, best known for her work on the Hulu series Dollface, has been tapped to write the script for the upcoming movie. This film is being developed as a Netflix exclusive, marking a major partnership between the streamer and Sony to keep the ghost-hunting spirit alive.
This animated feature is separate from the Ghostbusters animated series that is also currently in development at Netflix. While details on the plot remain under wraps, the addition of Jarvis suggests a tone that could lean into the clever, character-driven humor she is known for. The project is being produced by Ghost Corps’ Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the duo responsible for the recent live-action hits Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Kris Pearn, who directed The Willoughbys, is currently attached to direct.
The move back to animation is a full-circle moment for the franchise. Ghostbusters has a rich history in the medium, with The Real Ghostbusters in the 1980s and Extreme Ghostbusters in the 90s becoming cult classics. Sony Pictures Animation has a track record of pushing visual boundaries with films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and fans are eager to see what kind of “tactile” and “stylized” look this new era of Ghostbusters will bring to Netflix. With the script now in the hands of Jarvis, the next generation of busters is one step closer to hitting our screens.
