The king of clean comedy is officially trading the stand-up mic for the carpool lane. Sony Pictures has released the highly anticipated first trailer for The Breadwinner, a family comedy that marks the feature film debut of Nate Bargatze. Starring alongside Mandy Moore, Bargatze brings his signature deadpan delivery to a story that explores the hilarity that ensues when a traditional household dynamic gets a modern-day makeover.
For those who may be new to his work, Bargatze has spent the last two decades building a massive following as one of the most successful comedians in the world. Often called the “nicest man in stand-up,” he is known for his relatable, family-friendly humor that avoids profanity—a style that helped him sell over a million tickets last year and led to him hosting the Primetime Emmy Awards just a few months ago. Now, he is bringing that “everyman” charm to the big screen in a project he also co-wrote.
The film follows the Wilcox family, who find themselves in the middle of a major life transition after Katie Wilcox (Moore) successfully pitches a product on Shark Tank. The resulting business deal sends her on a high-stakes business trip, leaving her husband, Nate, to fend for himself as a first-time stay-at-home dad to their three daughters. A former car salesman with zero experience in the day-to-day grind of parenting, Nate quickly discovers that managing a household is a far more grueling task than anything he’s faced on the road. The trailer highlights the inevitable disasters, from laundry mishaps and cooking catastrophes to the overwhelming complexity of school drop-off schedules.
Directed by Eric Appel, who recently gained acclaim for his work on the Weird Al Yankovic biopic, the movie is being described as a refreshing return to the classic family comedies of the past. Bargatze co-wrote the script with Dan Lagana, the writer behind Christmas with the Campbells. The comedian has often noted that he enjoys creating content that multiple generations can watch together, and this film appears to lean heavily into that wholesome, “throwback” energy.
The supporting cast is a who’s who of comedy talent, including SNL’s Colin Jost, Will Forte, Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Cherry, and Kate Berlant. While Bargatze is entering new territory with this scripted debut, his track record of record-breaking arena tours suggests there is a huge audience ready to see him navigate the chaos of parenting. The film is currently set to hit theaters on March 13, 2026. You can watch the full trailer for the Wilcox family’s misadventures below.
