“Born to Run” to the Big Screen? First Trailer for Springsteen Biopic Sparks Debate

The highly anticipated first trailer for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere dropped on Wednesday, June 18, giving the world its initial glimpse of Jeremy Allen White as The Boss. Like a true Springsteen concert, it’s already sparking passionate, if divided, reactions among fans.

This isn’t your typical cradle-to-stadium biopic. Hitting theaters October 24, Deliver Me From Nowhere zeroes in on a pivotal, perhaps lesser-known, chapter in Springsteen’s legendary career: the creation of his raw, acoustic 1982 album, Nebraska. Fans know Nebraska marked a stark departure from his earlier anthemic, full-band sound. Recorded largely on a 4-track in his bedroom, it stands as a deeply personal, often somber collection of songs.

The trailer masterfully captures this intimate focus. White, as Springsteen, grapples with his acoustic guitar and harmonica in a hotel room, alongside his recording engineer (played by Paul Walter Hauser). The moody strains of Nebraska‘s title track set the tone, hinting at the introspection and internal struggles the film will explore. Black-and-white flashbacks offer glimpses into Springsteen’s childhood and his complex relationship with his father, portrayed by Stephen Graham.

But it’s not all quiet contemplation. The trailer quickly ramps up, transitioning to electrifying live performances with the unmistakable sound of “Born to Run” swelling in the background. This suggests the film will expertly weave together the intimate creative process behind Nebraska with the broader narrative of Springsteen’s ascent to superstardom.

A key moment in the trailer features Jeremy Strong (as Jon Landau, Springsteen’s long-time manager) delivering a powerful line: “This is not about the charts. This is about Bruce Springsteen.” It perfectly encapsulates the film’s apparent mission: to delve into the authentic artistry and personal journey behind the music, rather than just the commercial success.

Jeremy Allen White’s casting has fueled discussion since the project’s announcement, and the trailer has only intensified it. While some fans are hailing his transformation and praising what they see as a captivating performance, others remain unconvinced by his physical resemblance to The Boss. However, early reports confirm White performed his own vocals for the film, a commitment undoubtedly appreciated by purists.

Directed by Scott Cooper, known for films like Crazy Heart, and based on Warren Zanes’ biography Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, this film promises a unique and emotionally resonant look at one of music’s most enduring figures. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to The Boss’s world, this movie looks set to deliver a powerful story.
