Hold onto your popcorn, horror-comedy fans, because Warner Bros. just dropped a double dose of nostalgia that’s got us buzzing with excitement! In a recent chat with Deadline, studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy spilled the beans on two major projects that are sure to make waves: a brand-new Gremlins movie is in the works, and a sequel to last year’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is already brewing. Let’s dive into the details and unpack what this means for fans of these iconic franchises!
First up, let’s talk about those mischievous Mogwai. It’s been over three decades since Gremlins 2: The New Batch had us laughing and cringing at the chaotic antics of Gizmo and his not-so-cuddly spawn. Now, Warner Bros. is teaming up with Amblin Entertainment to bring the Gremlins franchise back to the big screen. The most exciting part? Chris Columbus, the writer behind the original 1984 classic, is leading the charge. Columbus has been vocal about wanting to steer the series back to its roots after the wild detour of the second film, and we’re thrilled to hear he’s on board to shape this new chapter.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard whispers of a third Gremlins flick—rumors have swirled for years, with Columbus himself teasing a “twisted and dark” script back in 2017. While details about the plot are still under wraps, the studio’s commitment to moving forward feels like a promising step. In the meantime, fans can get their Gremlins fix with the animated prequel series Gremlins: The Wild Batch, currently streaming on Max. It’s a fun appetizer, but let’s be real—nothing beats the thrill of seeing those pint-sized terrors wreak havoc in live action. Could we see Gizmo back in all his furry glory, or will Columbus introduce a new batch of creatures to stir up trouble? Only time will tell, but we’re already counting down the days.
Now, let’s shift gears to the Neitherworld, where things are about to get even spookier. Fresh off the success of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Warner Bros. is wasting no time planning the next installment. In the same Deadline interview, De Luca hinted that a sequel is “imminently” in development, even if the contracts are still being finalized. That’s right—our favorite bio-exorcist could be back sooner than we think! After the long-awaited return of Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara in 2024, the idea of another trip to Winter River has us practically chanting “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!”
The second film brought a fresh spin to the franchise, introducing new faces like Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz and diving deeper into the Deetz family’s quirky dynamic. While it’s too early to know where the story will go next, the tease of a third movie suggests Warner Bros. sees big potential in keeping the afterlife party going. Will Burton return to helm another chapter? Can we expect more of Keaton’s chaotic energy or perhaps a deeper dive into the afterlife’s bizarre bureaucracy? Whatever’s in store, we’re ready to strap in for another wild ride with the ghost with the most.
What makes this news so exciting is the shared DNA of these franchises. Both Gremlins and Beetlejuice are rooted in that perfect blend of horror and humor that defined ‘80s cinema, and their revivals feel like a love letter to fans who grew up with them. Warner Bros. seems to be banking on nostalgia while giving creators like Columbus and (potentially) Burton the freedom to explore new ideas. It’s a delicate balance—honoring what made these films special while keeping things fresh for today’s audiences.
These updates have us buzzing with anticipation for what’s next. A new Gremlins adventure and another Beetlejuice sequel? It’s like the ‘80s never left! For now, keep your eyes peeled for more news, and maybe stock up on some Mogwai-proof snacks—just in case!
