Kat Dennings, who stars alongside Tim Allen in the new ABC series Shifting Gears, recently opened up about her fond memories of working with the late Bob Saget. Saget, best known for his role on Full House, played her dad on the WB sitcom Raising Dad.
The short-lived series, which aired from 2001 to 2002, followed Saget’s character as he juggled life as a widowed father raising two daughters, played by Dennings and Brie Larson. While the show may have only lasted one season, it left a lasting impression on Dennings, thanks to Saget’s warmth and kindness.
“God bless him. I’m so sad that he’s gone,” Dennings shared in an interview with People. She described Saget as “lovely” to work with and remembered how much he cared about her as a young actress.
“What I remember was he was very protective of me because I was a young actress and he had daughters. So he was very sweet to me and very protective and very kind. I only remember very, very nice memories of him,” she said.
Exploring the Legacy of WB’s Raising Dad
Raising Dad premiered on The WB in October 2001 and ran for just one season before concluding in May 2002. The sitcom featured Bob Saget as Matt Stewart, a widowed high school English teacher navigating the challenges of parenting two daughters while balancing his career. Kat Dennings portrayed Sarah, the older, quick-witted teen, while Brie Larson played Emily, her younger, more mischievous sister. Adding humor and support to the household was Matt’s father, Sam, a retired baseball player portrayed by Jerry Adler.
The series offered a mix of heartfelt moments and lighthearted humor, focusing on the unique dynamics of a single-parent family. Despite its compelling cast and relatable premise, Raising Dad struggled to find its footing in The WB’s competitive lineup.
Behind the scenes, the show marked an early milestone in the careers of Dennings and Larson, who have since gone on to achieve critical and commercial success. Created by Jonathan Katz, the series also reflected Katz’s penchant for blending humor with deeper emotional themes, as seen in his earlier work, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.
Although Raising Dad was short-lived, it remains a nostalgic gem for fans of early 2000s television and serves as a fascinating snapshot of its talented cast before they became household names.
