Whoopi Goldberg is set to make a triumphant return to the stage in a revival of the beloved musical “Annie.” The EGOT winner has shared a first-look image of herself as the iconic villain Miss Hannigan, sparking excitement among theater enthusiasts and fans alike.
“Annie,” based on the comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray, first premiered on Broadway in 1977. The musical, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Thomas Meehan, quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Its heartwarming story of an optimistic orphan girl in Depression-era New York, coupled with memorable songs like “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” has captivated audiences for decades.
The show’s enduring popularity has led to numerous productions worldwide, including a West End premiere, several Broadway revivals, and multiple film adaptations. Now, this latest revival promises to bring the magic of “Annie” to a new generation.
The touring production will take center stage at The Theater at Madison Square Garden for a five-week holiday season run. Goldberg is scheduled to join the cast in the second week, performing from December 11 to January 5. This role marks Goldberg’s eighth appearance on Broadway, following her groundbreaking 1984 solo show and her most recent stint in “Sister Act” in 2011. The star admitted to feeling both excited and nervous about her return, saying, “It’s been a while, and it’s kinda exciting and scary.”
As Miss Hannigan, the cruel orphanage matron who serves as Annie’s primary antagonist, Goldberg will have the opportunity to showcase her musical talents in one of the show’s most memorable numbers, “Easy Street.” This showstopping song, performed by Miss Hannigan and her criminal cohorts, has long been a favorite among theater fans. The actress expressed confidence in her ability to handle the music, noting that it’s all within her vocal range.
Joining Goldberg on stage will be Hazel Vogel as Annie. The young actress, who recently turned 12, will bring fresh energy to the titular role, following in the footsteps of notable performers like Andrea McArdle, who originated the role on Broadway, and Aileen Quinn, who starred in the 1982 film adaptation.
With Whoopi Goldberg’s star power, a talented cast, and the timeless appeal of “Annie,” this revival is poised to be a must-see theatrical event of the holiday season. It promises to remind audiences why this story of hope, perseverance, and the power of optimism has remained a beloved part of musical theater for nearly half a century.
