Jenna Ortega Reflects on ‘Wednesday’ Script Changes: Lessons Learned from Creative Tensions

Jenna Ortega has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind, especially when it comes to her portrayal of Wednesday Addams on Netflix’s Wednesday. Recently, she opened up about the controversy that sparked after she revealed she made unapproved script changes during the first season—a move that certainly got people talking.

Back in March 2023, during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Jenna candidly admitted to altering dialogue on set, driven by her deep connection to the character. This candidness, however, led to a wave of reactions online, with some praising her dedication and others questioning the ethics of her approach.

Fast forward to now, and Jenna is taking a moment to reflect. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, she acknowledged that she could have communicated her thoughts a bit more carefully. “I probably could have used my words better in describing all of that,” she admitted, highlighting the importance of choosing the right words, especially when discussing something as delicate as creative differences.

The backlash she faced was intense, something Jenna described as almost surreal. She felt like her every word was under a microscope, which was a lot to handle, especially for someone naturally inclined to want to please others. But, as she pointed out, “Some people just may not like you… and that’s entirely fine,” showing her growth in embracing who she is without trying to satisfy everyone.

Jenna’s protective nature over Wednesday Addams was at the heart of the controversy. She felt a strong need to ensure the character stayed true to her essence, even if that meant stepping on some toes in the process. While her actions were driven by passion, they also caused some friction, particularly with the show’s writers, who were occasionally left out of the loop.

Despite the bumps along the way, Jenna’s commitment to the role is undeniable. As she steps into a producer role for the second season of Wednesday, it’s clear she’s more focused than ever on finding that sweet spot between creative expression and collaboration. With production already underway since May, fans are eagerly waiting to see how the next chapter unfolds.

Jenna’s reflections are a reminder of the complexities of working in the entertainment industry, where communication and collaboration are key. As she continues to evolve in her career, it’s evident that Jenna is using her experiences to become an even more thoughtful and intentional artist.
