Legendary cult filmmaker John Waters is making his bloody return to the horror franchise that helped make him a recognizable face even to non-cult film fans – Chucky. Waters has signed on to guest star in an episode of the hit SYFY and USA Network series Chucky, reprising his role as a character in the killer doll’s universe.
Waters actually made his Chucky debut back in 2004’s Seed of Chucky, playing a tabloid photographer named Pete Peters who has an unfortunate run-in with some sulfuric acid. While that role was short-lived, Waters left enough of an impression that fans still recognize him from it nearly 20 years later. As he told EW, “I still get recognized on the subway from Chucky, the only person who has ever recognized me on the subway, it’s because of Chucky.”
Now Waters returns to the franchise as Wendell Wilkins, the mysterious recluse who created the Good Guy dolls that became the vessels for Chucky’s murderous spirit. Little is known about Wilkins, making Waters’ casting a delightful twist that raises many questions. What secrets might Wilkins hold about Chucky’s origins? And what diabolical plans might Chucky have in store for his maker?
Waters joins Chucky’s rotating cast of familiar faces that includes franchise mainstays like Jennifer Tilly and Devon Sawa playing multiple roles across films and the TV series. Clearly creator Don Mancini has no issue welcoming back talented stars, even in new parts. And Waters’ unconventional presence feels like an ideal fit for the increasingly campy and offbeat tone of the series.
While details remain scarce about Waters’ role in the upcoming third season, his return promises to be a creepy and kooky treat for longtime fans. And it may just introduce a new generation to the provocative filmmaker’s signature style. Wherever the storyline goes, one thing is certain – it will be anything but dull with Mr. Waters involved!
