The independent film “The Shift” has defied expectations by remaining in the box office top 10 during its second weekend in theaters. Distributed by Angel Studios, the sci-fi romance took in what the studio described as a strong gross over the weekend.
Angel Studios noted this second weekend figure represents only a small decline from The Shift’s opening weekend box office performance. Comparatively, that’s a smaller week-to-week drop than many new releases see.
While specific box office earnings were not disclosed, Angel Studios reports that The Shift continues finding an audience as some fans return for repeat viewings.
Directed by first-time filmmaker Brock Heasley and starring Kristoffer Polaha, “The Shift” tells the story of a man traversing alternate worlds to reunite with a lost love. The film currently holds an 87% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, indicating positive word-of-mouth.
While still early, “The Shift” is shaping up to be a surprise theatrical hit. Performance metrics suggest the film is exceeding box office expectations in its first two weeks of release. It remains to be seen if “The Shift” can maintain momentum in the crowded holiday box office as it heads into its third weekend.
