Former teen sitcom stars Melissa Joan Hart and Will Friedle recently made a surprise revelation on Friedle’s podcast – they had a brief, secret teenage romance back in the 1990s.
On the latest episode of Friedle’s Boy Meets World rewatch podcast Pod Meets World, Hart was a guest and dished about her childhood crush on her Clarissa Explains It All co-star. “He was, like, my heartthrob,” Hart confessed. “All my books said ‘I heart Will’ when I was, like, 14.”
Friedle then recalled attending Hart’s arcade birthday bash when they were young. “I was with you for, like, your 14th birthday or 15th,” he said. “We were making googly eyes at each other. And by the end of the night, we were ‘dating.'”
While neither could recall whether they actually kissed or not, both agreed it was a fleeting teenage romance. But it seemed to hold a special place in Hart’s heart, as she recently rediscovered a childhood notebook adorned with Friedle’s first name. “At first I was like, ‘Who’s Will?'” she admitted. “And then, something came to me where I was like, ‘Oh my God! I know who that is!'”
Of course, Hart and Friedle went on to star in their own hit 1990s sitcoms, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Boy Meets World respectively. Hart even guest starred in a crossover episode of Boy Meets World, though by then their whirlwind tween love affair had long fizzled out.
Still, it’s a delightful bit of nostalgia for 90s kids to know that two of their biggest teen idols once had eyes for each other, even if it didn’t work out in the end. It just goes to show how even celebrity relationships that stay out of the public eye can hold treasured memories for the stars themselves.
