Fans of the Ghostbusters franchise received disappointing news this week, as Sony Pictures announced that the hotly anticipated sequel to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been delayed until March 2024.
Originally set for a December 2023 release, the still untitled Ghostbusters sequel will now open on March 29, 2024 – taking over the release date previously held by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Sony cited ongoing issues surrounding the SAG-AFTRA strike as the reason for shuffling their release calendar. Other major Sony films impacted include Kraven the Hunter (pushed from October 2023 to August 2024) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is now undated.
The Ghostbusters delay comes as a blow following positive buzz around the recent production, which wrapped filming in the UK this summer. Original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts are all set to return, alongside Afterlife leads Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard and Paul Rudd.
