Flavia de Luce is officially bringing her detective work to American theaters. The first US trailer for Flavia: Girl Detective, the family mystery starring Molly Belle Wright as the eleven-year-old sleuth from Alan Bradley’s bestselling novels, debuted today through Collider ahead of the film’s December 4 theatrical release from Magenta Light Studios.
Set in England in 1951, the film follows Flavia, a chemistry prodigy with a particular fascination for poisons, who discovers a dead body in the cucumber patch of her family’s crumbling manor house. When her father, Havilland (Martin Freeman), confesses to the crime, Flavia launches her own investigation to clear his name, crossing paths with Inspector Hewitt (Toby Jones) and the mysterious Dr. Kissing (Jonathan Pryce) as the case begins to expose long-buried secrets about her missing mother, Harriet.

Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) from a screenplay by Susan Coyne (Daisy Jones & the Six), Flavia: Girl Detective adapts The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, the first of Bradley’s Flavia de Luce novels. The series will close with a twelfth and final book, Numb Were the Beadsman’s Fingers, arriving next month; Bradley died earlier this year at 87.
The film premiered in the United Kingdom on Sky Cinema and the streaming service NOW on April 4, and TDN reported in June that Magenta Light Studios had acquired the US rights and set the theatrical date. American audiences will recognize Wright as Beth Bradley in Lionsgate’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Magenta Light Studios also shared the trailer on Instagram today as a collaboration with Wright’s own account, and Flavia: Girl Detective arrives in US theaters December 4.
