Sony and Legendary Pictures have officially announced that the live-action adaptation of Capcom’s classic “Street Fighter” video game series will hit theaters on March 20, 2026. This announcement comes after the departure of directors Danny and Michael Philippou, who are now off the project known for their work on the horror film “Talk to Me.” The production team is currently in search of a new director, with plot details being kept confidential.
The “Street Fighter” franchise, a cornerstone of video game history since its debut in 1987, revolves around a global martial arts tournament. The series gained immense popularity with the release of “Street Fighter II” in 1991, which introduced innovative gameplay elements such as combo attacks and special moves, setting new standards in the gaming world.
Over the years, the “Street Fighter” series has sold over 49 million units worldwide, making it one of the most successful video game franchises ever. The latest title, “Street Fighter 6,” was released in June 2023 on various platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam, continuing the legacy of the beloved series.
Legendary, which acquired the live-action film and TV rights to “Street Fighter” in April 2023, is developing the film in partnership with Capcom. Sony will manage the film’s distribution. Previous adaptations of the franchise include the 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and the 2009 film “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.”
The release date for the “Street Fighter” film positions it in a competitive timeframe, with several other major films scheduled for release in March and April of 2026.
