Disney’s live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” has generated controversy prior to its release.
Criticism has come from multiple angles. David Hand, son of the original film’s director, said both his father and Walt Disney would likely disapprove of the remake’s “woke” approach, which he feels shows no respect for the original.
The casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, as Snow White had already drawn some public backlash. Actor Peter Dinklage also criticized the film for potentially reinforcing stereotypes about dwarfism. Disney has said the remake aims not to reinforce stereotypes.
Zegler herself has also expressed disinterest with the original 1937 film, saying this version does not focus on Snow White’s love story but rather her inner journey. The remake is reported to be a musical starring Zegler, Gal Gadot and others.
While likely to attract audiences curious about a reimagined take, the filmmakers face the challenge of retelling a classic story in a new light while also facing backlash from multiple perspectives. The remake is set for release in 2024.
