Colleen Hoover’s readers showed up. Verity, the Amazon MGM Studios thriller starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, opened to $62.5 million worldwide, including $32.6 million domestically, according to Deadline.
That makes it the second-biggest opening ever for a Hoover adaptation, behind only It Ends With Us and its $95.6 million worldwide start in like-for-like markets. Verity topped the global launches of Regretting You ($23.6 million) and Reminders of Him ($28.1 million), and even beat Practical Magic 2’s $46 million worldwide opening. The film cost $40 million to make.
The domestic audience was 78 percent female, though the film also drew in viewers who never read the book and male moviegoers. Overseas, it opened at No. 1 in the UK ($4.5 million), Germany ($3.8 million), Brazil ($3.8 million) and Australia ($3.1 million), with Taiwan, Korea and Japan still to come. As TDN reported, the film held its New York premiere days before opening only in theaters on October 2.
