Get ready to sing your heart out. Buddy is coming back to theaters, and this time the audience is part of the show.
Roadside Attractions and Saban Films have announced Buddy: The Sing-Along Version, a special theatrical engagement of Casper Kelly’s horror hit featuring on-screen lyrics to all of the film’s songs. It opens in theaters nationwide on October 2.
Fans are encouraged to dress up, sing their hearts out, and join Buddy and his friends for what the distributors call an immersive, one-of-a-kind theatrical experience. The sing-along set list includes “It’s Buddy!,” “You’ve Got to Be Scared to Be Brave,” and “The Wrong Place in Town.”
“Buddy audiences have inspired us like nothing we’ve seen before,” said Roadside Attractions Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff and Saban Films Co-President Jonathan Saba. “They’re already singing and dancing in the aisles. Buddy: The Sing-Along Version is really just catching up with what these amazing fans are already doing, and we think they’re going to love it.”
Ahead of the nationwide opening, Buddy will host a special gala premiere on Tuesday, September 29 at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale, California. Director Casper Kelly, cast members Delaney Quinn, Madison Skyy Polan, CJ Williams, and Luke Speakman, and Buddy himself are expected to attend and sing along with fans. Tickets for the orange-carpet event sold out within three hours of being posted on Buddy’s social media pages.
The sing-along release caps a remarkable theatrical run for the $3 million indie. As TDN previously reported, Buddy passed $20 million at the domestic box office earlier this month, and it has since grossed more than $25 million over five weeks, becoming the highest-grossing film in Saban Films’ history and Roadside Attractions’ third-highest-grossing release of all time, behind only I Can Only Imagine and Manchester by the Sea.
Buddy centers on the titular orange unicorn, a beloved children’s TV host whose squeaky-clean persona hides a dark and violent nature. Cristin Milioti stars as Grace, a suburban mother drawn into Buddy’s nightmare world, with Delaney Quinn as Freddy, the brave girl who fights back. Keegan-Michael Key voices Buddy, with Topher Grace, Michael Shannon, and Patton Oswalt rounding out the cast.
