Sonic the Hedgehog is racing back to Netflix with a brand-new animated series, this time aimed at the youngest fans.
Netflix and Sega announced Monday a multi-title partnership that includes a new “Sonic the Hedgehog” animated series for an upper preschool audience, alongside live-action films based on “Crazy Taxi” and the upcoming game “Stranger Than Heaven.”
The Sonic series is being developed by Carlos Stevens (“Love, Death + Robots”) and Sega head producer Toru Nakahara. According to Netflix, the show will present Sonic and his friends as heroes for upper preschoolers in “a high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfillment.”
“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing, characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of nonfiction and transmedia. “With ‘Crazy Taxi,’ ‘Sonic,’ and ‘Stranger Than Heaven,’ we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences.”
“Expect something cute yet cool for ‘Sonic,’ hilariously crazy for ‘Crazy Taxi’ and a badass action drama for ‘Stranger Than Heaven,’ because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started,” added Nakahara. “The whole team is absolutely thrilled!”
Shuji Utsumi, president and COO of Sega, said the company has “watched Netflix take on stories across every kind of format and treat each one with real craft,” adding, “The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honors what makes each title special, and we know Netflix shares that commitment.”
The new series is separate from “Sonic Prime,” Netflix’s previous animated Sonic series, which ran for three seasons from December 2022 to January 2024.
The rest of the Sega and Netflix slate includes a live-action “Crazy Taxi” comedy film written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the duo behind the 2025 reboot of “The Naked Gun,” with Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Nakahara producing. A live-action crime film based on “Stranger Than Heaven,” Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s upcoming action RPG, is also in the works with Nakahara producing. The game itself is set to release on January 15, 2027.
No premiere dates have been announced for any of the three projects.
