Andrew Garfield and Paul Greengrass Celebrate The Uprising’s Premiere as Film Heads to Fortnite

Andrew Garfield and Paul Greengrass got an early taste of how audiences are already living inside The Uprising, even before the film reaches theaters. On Wednesday, September 2, Focus Features hosted the movie’s Los Angeles premiere at the DGA Theater, bringing the director together with much of his cast against a backdrop built entirely around the film’s brooding title art, just over a week ahead of the film’s nationwide release.

Greengrass, who wrote and directed the film, posed alongside stars Garfield, Thomasin McKenzie, Woody Norman and Katherine Waterston, with producers Jason Blum, Joanna Kaye and Gregory Goodman rounding out the group. The night carried on with an afterparty at Bar Avoja inside Mother Wolf, where additional guests including Jude Law, Alexandra Shipp and Sharon Stone joined the celebration.

The Uprising casts Garfield as the leader of a rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II, drawn from the true events that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood. The film also stars Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Jonny Lee Miller and Sky Yang alongside McKenzie, Norman and Waterston, and was produced by Blum, Greengrass, Goodman, Kaye, Joe Neurauter and Lars Sylvest. Focus Features has set the film for a nationwide theatrical release on September 11.

Ahead of that release, fans do not have to wait to step inside the story. Focus Features has partnered with Sawhorse Productions and Genesis Studios to bring The Uprising into Fortnite through a free custom experience called Enter the Revolt, built using Unreal Editor for Fortnite and live now for players to try. Set in 1380s England, the mode pits two teams of five against each other as Rebels and Kingsmen fight over the gates of London.

Rebels push a battering ram through four escalating stages, moving from open farmland to the city’s fortified walls, while Kingsmen work to hold the line before time runs out. Along the way, players fight with era-appropriate melee weapons and bows, earn in-match currency and upgrade their health, speed and damage. Each match ends with a cinematic sequence tied to the film’s story, giving players a different glimpse of the narrative depending on whether the Rebels or the Kingsmen come out on top.

The crossover taps into one of the biggest audiences in gaming, with Fortnite reporting more than 650 million registered accounts and 110 million monthly active users. For Focus Features, it offers a way to put The Uprising’s world in front of players who might not otherwise walk into a theater for a historical epic, while giving fans a way to keep the story going between premiere buzz and opening weekend.

With the Los Angeles premiere behind it and its Fortnite experience already drawing players in, The Uprising is set to open in theaters nationwide on September 10. Fans can catch the official trailer now ahead of release.
