Netflix added 15 actors to “Scooby-Doo: Origins” on Wednesday, filling out the supporting ensemble around the show’s four teenage leads as production continues in Atlanta ahead of a 2027 premiere.
Sara Gilbert, Bruce McGill, Sherilyn Fenn, and Rusty Schwimmer are among the new names set to star alongside Paul Walter Hauser and the previously announced Mystery Inc. gang of Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the full list Wednesday.
The complete slate of additions includes Peter Macon, Maxwell Simkins, Jona Xiao, Dani Deetté, Elysée Sanvillé, Alex Isles, Avery Kristen Pohl, Pamela Mitchell, Ross Kimball, Wynn Everett, and Sauriyan Sapkota. Character details weren’t disclosed for any of the 15, which the show is keeping under wraps while filming runs through this fall.
Hauser, who joins the show as a series regular in an undisclosed role, was previously announced as part of the cast. His involvement has generated considerable fan chatter, given his reputation for scene-stealing supporting work. He’s known for his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning performance in “Black Bird” and his turn as Stingray in “Cobra Kai.”
Gilbert, who played Darlene Conner across three decades of “Roseanne” and “The Connors,” brings one of the more recognizable faces to the supporting cast. Fenn, whose credits include “Twin Peaks,” and McGill, a character actor whose recent work spans “Reacher” and “Lioness,” round out the headline names in the group.
The series comes from Warner Bros. Television with co-showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg executive producing through Midnight Radio, alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti Productions. Toby Haynes, whose directing credits include “Andor,” “Black Mirror,” and “Doctor Who,” directs the pilot.
The eight-episode show is described as a live-action prequel series of sorts, exploring how the mystery-solving crew first formed. During their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get pulled into a haunting mystery surrounding a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Together with Velma and Fred, they set out to solve a case pulling each of them into a nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.
This is the first time a real-life dog will play the role of Scooby-Doo. Even in the earlier live-action films, the character was CGI. Frank Welker, who has voiced both Fred Jones and Scooby-Doo over the past five decades, is reportedly returning to voice the character. But the dog itself is a real Great Dane puppy, currently shooting at Cinespace Film Studios in Atlanta.
Production is set to continue through September, with the series slated to premiere globally on Netflix in 2027.
