Focus Features is preparing to release the biographical musical drama Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as real-life musicians Mike and Claire Sardina. Written and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), the film chronicles the true story of a Milwaukee couple who found local stardom as “Lightning & Thunder,” a high-energy Neil Diamond tribute band.
Based on the 2008 documentary by Greg Kohs, the narrative explores the duo’s journey from playing local dive bars to achieving unexpected fame in the 1990s. Beyond the musical performances, the film is a portrait of resilience, detailing the personal tragedies and triumphs that defined the Sardinas’ relationship. Jackman and Hudson lead an ensemble cast that includes Michael Imperioli, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi, and musician King Princess in her film debut.
The film serves as a significant musical return for Jackman, marking his first major musical project since The Greatest Showman. Both leads recently received a Musical Tribute award at the Gotham Awards for their work in the film, which features live-performance sequences of Neil Diamond’s most iconic hits.
Song Sung Blue is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide on December 25.
