We’ve watched Ryan Kiera Armstrong tackle some intense roles over the years, from her fiery lead in the Firestarter remake to her chilling appearances on American Horror Story. Now, she’s stepping into one of the most iconic franchises in TV history, and she’s doing it with the full support of the original Slayer.
Armstrong, who was cast in Hulu’s upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel, recently revealed the powerful promise Sarah Michelle Gellar made to her as she takes on this massive new role.
In an interview with Collider, Armstrong confirmed that Gellar—who is starring and executive producing—is providing serious mentorship on set.
“She’s just as lovely as she seems on camera,” Armstrong shared. “One of the first things she said to me was, ‘I will protect you. I’ll help guide you.’ It still gets me. I love Sarah.”
For an actress navigating the pressures of a beloved franchise, that kind of support from the original star is invaluable. “With everything, I have someone to always go to now,” Armstrong added.
The new Buffy sequel is shaping up to be a major event for Hulu. Gellar is joined on the executive production team by Chloé Zhao (who is also directing the pilot), writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, and the legendary Dolly Parton, who returns as an executive producer via her Sandollar banner.
