‘Wednesday’ Season 2: Creators Discuss Jenna Ortega’s Expanded Role, Family Drama, and Tyler’s Future

Netflix’s hit series Wednesday returned for Season 2 Part 1 with higher stakes, deeper family drama, and a murder mystery that pushes its gothic heroine to the brink. Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar recently discussed the new season’s developments in an interview with Variety, exploring the origins of Morticia’s concerns over Wednesday’s psychic powers, the secretive L.O.I.S. program, and the uncertain path ahead for Tyler Galpin.

Season 2 brings the Addams family closer than ever to Nevermore Academy — and not always in ways Wednesday welcomes. Pugsley joins as a student, while Morticia takes a fundraising role on campus. Tensions rise when Wednesday’s psychic abilities, once a source of triumph, begin to backfire. Her visions now trigger fainting spells and ominous black tears, a condition Morticia links to her sister Ophelia’s past trauma. Morticia intervenes by confiscating a spellbook from Goody Addams, urging Wednesday to rest — a decision that comes at the worst possible moment as a new string of murders unfolds.

The central mystery leads Wednesday, Uncle Fester, Grandmama Hester, and newcomer Agnes to uncover the Long-term Outcast Integration Study (L.O.I.S.), a hidden operation at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital run by Judi Stonehurst. Disguised as an assistant, Judi uses her control over birds and her father’s twisted legacy to experiment on outcasts and steal their abilities. The plot ties back to Sheriff Galpin’s investigation, as he sought to protect Tyler from becoming a target.

The season’s climax sees chaos erupt at Willow Hill when Fester frees the captives, Tyler kills Marilyn Thornhill, and Wednesday is injured during their confrontation. Tyler escapes, leaving Wednesday to question whether her actions have unleashed greater danger. The creators confirm that Part 2 will explore Tyler’s life beyond the asylum and challenge Wednesday’s belief that he cannot be rehabilitated.

Gough and Millar emphasized that at its heart, Wednesday remains a family drama. The Addams clan’s fierce loyalty contrasts with the Galpins’ history of secrets and resentment, adding emotional depth to the supernatural storyline. The show also introduces layered conflicts between three generations of Addams women, with Morticia’s decision to destroy the spellbook during a sword duel symbolizing their ongoing power struggle.

Production for the new season moved from Romania to Ireland, a change the creators say expanded the show’s scope and offered the cast a sense of normalcy away from paparazzi. Gough and Millar also highlighted Jenna Ortega’s expanded role as producer in Season 2, noting that she had already been closely involved with scripts and creative discussions from the very beginning. Formalizing her producer title has strengthened that collaboration, giving her additional insight into the show’s behind-the-scenes operations.

Reflecting on their earlier success with Smallville, Gough and Millar drew parallels between Clark Kent’s family dynamics and Wednesday’s story, stressing the importance of portraying loving yet conflicted relationships. They believe Wednesday resonates because it celebrates individuality, appeals to all ages, and presents a protagonist who is both fearless and flawed — an outsider that viewers across generations can relate to.
