Could an Encanto Sequel Be in the Cards? John Leguizamo Drops Hints

NOTE: This article is 3 months old and may not include the most recent information.

The magical world of Encanto might not be done enchanting audiences just yet. John Leguizamo, the voice of the quirky and clairvoyant Bruno Madrigal, recently fueled speculation about a sequel during an interview with PEOPLE at the opening night of Buena Vista Social Club. While Disney hasn’t confirmed anything, the 64-year-old actor’s enthusiasm has fans buzzing about a potential return to the Madrigal family’s vibrant Colombian village.

Leguizamo didn’t hold back his excitement, joking to PEOPLE, “I’m also waiting for an Encanto 2 when all we do is talk about Bruno.” The quip references the film’s runaway hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which soared past Frozen’s “Let It Go” on the Billboard charts and became a cultural earworm. He went on to reveal, “I’m calling them every day saying, ‘When is number two coming?’ They’re trying to come up with the storyline. They’re working on it.” Whether he’s actually dialing Disney daily or not, his comments hint at behind-the-scenes efforts to bring a second installment to life.

Since its debut in November 2021, Encanto has captivated audiences with its tale of the Madrigal family, where each member boasts a magical gift—except for Mirabel, voiced by Stephanie Beatriz. Paired with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s infectious score and a rich exploration of family ties, the film snagged an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Though its theatrical run was modest, its Disney+ release turned it into a global phenomenon, proving its staying power in the Disney canon.

For Leguizamo, revisiting Bruno—a character sidelined for his eerie predictions until his heartfelt redemption—seems like a dream gig. A sequel could dive into his new role within the family or unravel more mysteries about their magical origins, both tantalizing possibilities for longtime fans.

Disney has kept quiet on any Encanto 2 plans, but their history of greenlighting follow-ups like Frozen 2 and the soon-to-drop Moana 2 keeps hope alive. Leguizamo’s assurance that “they’re working on it” suggests the gears are turning, even if the plot remains under wraps. Until an official word comes down, his tease is enough to keep the conversation alive.

The Encanto faithful are already lighting up social media with sequel wishlists, and Leguizamo’s comments only add fuel to the fire. Will Bruno take center stage, or will Mirabel lead the charge again? For now, it’s a waiting game—but one that promises more magic if Disney delivers.
