A24’s Barney Movie Advances with Ayo Edebiri as Writer

The live-action Barney movie, developed by A24, Mattel, and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions, has progressed with the addition of Ayo Edebiri as screenwriter. Reported on February 25 by Variety and Deadline, Edebiri, recognized for her work on The Bear, is also in discussions to star. This update marks a notable development for a project first announced in 2019.

The film reimagines Barney, the purple dinosaur from the PBS series Barney & Friends (1992–2010), originally created for young children. In 2019, Kaluuya, attached as producer, described it as an exploration of a “misunderstood” figure, aiming to assess the durability of Barney’s message of love. By July 2023, Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon labeled it an “A24-type” project, targeting adults and focusing on “millennial angst” rather than a child audience. Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz later clarified in October 2023 that the film would not be overly unconventional, indicating a controlled approach to its tone.

Edebiri’s involvement introduces a new element to the production. She is known for her writing and acting in The Bear and Bottoms. Her role may extend to starring, though no confirmation has been provided. Kaluuya will not act in the film, focusing on production duties with Rowan Riley. Industry sources, as reported by Deadline, suggest the script will aim to subvert expectations while drawing on Barney’s cultural significance. Social media activity on X, including posts from Consequence, noted the adult-oriented direction of the project.

Announced in November 2019, the movie has seen limited public progress until recently. A 2023 Collider report cited casting delays, but Edebiri’s addition indicates movement. No production start or release date has been set, and the storyline remains undisclosed. Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner has referenced themes of “identity and alienation” in past statements. The film is a joint effort by Mattel Films, A24, and 59% Productions, aligning with Mattel’s strategy to adapt its properties following the Barbie film’s $1.4 billion gross in 2023. A separate animated Barney project on Max targets a different audience.

This project is part of Mattel’s plan to develop 45 toy-based films, including Hot Wheels and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. A24’s involvement distinguishes it from typical adaptations, given its history with films like The Lobster and Midsommar. The film’s focus on millennials reflects an interest in their experiences with nostalgia and current challenges, though its execution is untested.

No production timeline has been confirmed, and the lack of plot details leaves its direction unclear. The challenge lies in aligning A24’s style with Mattel’s brand interests, a balance that will depend on Edebiri’s script. The Barney movie remains in development with Edebiri’s participation as the latest milestone. Its outcome—whether a successful reinterpretation or an overambitious misstep—is pending further updates. The industry continues to monitor its progress.
