If you grew up in the 90s, you probably remember Christine Lakin as Al Lambert, the tomboy with a sharp wit on the hit sitcom Step by Step. These days, though, Christine is making waves in Hollywood not in front of the camera, but behind it. Her story is a testament to the power of following your passion and evolving with your craft.
A Star is Born on Step by Step
Christine landed her role on Step by Step at just 12 years old. Playing Al, she quickly became a fan favorite on the show, which followed a blended family navigating life together. Starring alongside TV legends Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers, Christine fondly remembers how special the series was. During a recent interview on the Full House Rewind podcast, she shared how the producers, Thomas L. Miller and Robert L. Boyett, created an amazing environment that made the cast feel like family.
Even though Step by Step wrapped up in 1998, Christine’s career was just getting started.
Finding Her Next Chapter
After the show ended, Christine’s path took an unexpected turn. Her background in dance led her to choreograph for a theater company in Los Angeles, which sparked something new. She discovered a love for working behind the scenes, helping actors perfect their movements and creating memorable moments. Soon enough, she was choreographing for hit shows like True Blood, Westworld, and 90210.
Christine didn’t plan on stepping into this role—it just kind of happened. But saying yes to these opportunities paved the way for her next big adventure.
Behind the Camera: A Perfect Fit
As Christine gained experience behind the scenes, her interests shifted even further. She began directing episodes for TV hits like The Goldbergs, its spin-off Schooled, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She realized she loved collaborating with writers and producers, bringing creative visions to life.
In her own words, “I think I like being behind the camera more than I even like being in front of it.” Directing, she explained, felt like the culmination of everything she’d learned throughout her career. It’s where she’s found her true passion.
Why Christine Lakin’s Story Matters
Christine’s journey is proof that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. From child star to director, she’s embraced change and found a way to thrive in Hollywood by following her creative instincts.
