As of September 23, Disney has officially shut down several of its popular mobile and connected TV apps, including DisneyNow, ABC, Freeform, and FX. This significant move is part of Disney’s broader strategy to consolidate its streaming services, redirecting viewers to its primary platforms, Disney+ and Hulu.
The closure of these apps means that viewers will no longer be able to access content through Disney’s network-specific apps on mobile devices or smart TVs. Instead, Disney is encouraging audiences to use Disney+ or Hulu to catch their favorite shows and movies. In addition, users can still access content from ABC, Freeform, FX, and other Disney-owned networks through the respective network websites, although a traditional TV provider login is required.
This decision is in line with Disney’s ongoing efforts to streamline its digital offerings and focus on bolstering its core streaming services. By directing more users to Disney+ and Hulu, the company is positioning itself to compete more effectively in the highly competitive streaming landscape.
DisneyNow, which was a favorite for younger audiences thanks to its lineup of Disney Channel shows, is particularly missed, but the company is banking on Disney+ to fill the gap with its expansive library of Disney Channel and other family-friendly content.
The shutdown of the apps signals a shift in how viewers are expected to consume content from Disney’s networks. Rather than managing multiple apps, Disney is now focused on delivering a more unified and simplified streaming experience through its flagship platforms.
