Fans of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday have reason to celebrate: Tim Burton is set to return as director for Season 2, helming four of the eight episodes just as he did in the inaugural season. This exciting news was confirmed by series co-creator Al Gough during a conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub.
Burton’s involvement in the first season was instrumental in establishing the show’s eerie and whimsical tone. His signature style seamlessly blended with the world of The Addams Family, bringing a fresh yet familiar feel to the adventures of the iconic Wednesday Addams, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. The first season’s success, boasting a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is a testament to this perfect match of director and material.
A Passion Project for Burton
According to Gough, Burton’s decision to return wasn’t driven by contractual obligations or financial incentives. “He just loves the show, and he loves working with Jenna,” Gough shared. This genuine passion mirrors Burton’s approach to his recent film, Beetlejuice 2, where his motivation stemmed from a deep connection to the story rather than external pressures.
Burton’s dedication is refreshing in an industry often criticized for churning out content without heart. Gough highlighted Burton’s non-cynical approach, emphasizing that his work remains authentic and true to his unique vision. “We all know what a Tim Burton movie is,” Gough noted, praising the director’s ability to create universally appealing stories while maintaining his distinct style.
Production Progress and What to Expect
The production of Wednesday Season 2 is already halfway complete. The team returned to the set in May, and while there’s still much work to be done at Nevermore Academy, everything is progressing smoothly. The new season is expected to premiere late next year, marking a two-year gap both in real time and within the show’s storyline.
Jenna Ortega isn’t just returning as the lead actress; she’s also stepping into a producer role for the upcoming season. This move indicates a deeper involvement in the creative process and suggests that her portrayal of Wednesday will continue to evolve in exciting ways.
The cast is expanding with notable additions like Steve Buscemi, Christopher Lloyd, and Thandiwe Newton. They join returning stars such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, and Fred Armisen. This ensemble promises to bring new dynamics and depth to the story.
A Shift in Tone and Focus
Season 2 is set to amplify the horror and action elements, drawing inspiration from classic films like Prom Night and Carrie. Ortega has hinted at a darker, more intense atmosphere, which should delight fans eager for more thrills.
One significant change is the reduced emphasis on romance. The creators have listened to feedback and are steering Wednesday away from love interests to focus more on her friendships and personal growth. This shift allows for a deeper exploration of her character and her relationships with those around her, particularly with her friend Enid Sinclair, played by Emma Myers.
Anticipation Builds
As the production of Wednesday Season 2 moves forward, anticipation continues to build. With Tim Burton’s renewed involvement, Jenna Ortega’s expanded role, and an exciting cast lineup, the upcoming season promises to deliver more of the enchanting and macabre storytelling that captivated audiences in Season 1.
For those who haven’t yet experienced the dark charm of Wednesday, the first season is currently streaming on Netflix. It’s the perfect time to catch up before the next chapter unfolds at Nevermore Academy.
Stay tuned for more updates on Wednesday Season 2 as we await its release next year.
