Rotten Tomatoes has introduced a new badge to recognize films that have garnered strong approval from audiences. The “Verified Hot” badge will be awarded to movies with a verified audience score of 90% or higher, offering a new way to gauge a film’s popularity among viewers.
What is the “Verified Hot” Badge?
The “Verified Hot” badge is designed to spotlight movies that receive high ratings from verified audience members on Rotten Tomatoes. This new badge is separate from the “Certified Fresh” badge, which is based on critics’ reviews, and focuses on feedback from everyday moviegoers who have purchased tickets and verified their ratings.
Addressing Concerns Over Review Bombing
The introduction of the “Verified Hot” badge comes amid ongoing concerns about review bombing, where groups of people deliberately leave negative reviews to skew a film’s ratings. By relying on verified audience scores, Rotten Tomatoes hopes to provide a more accurate representation of genuine viewer sentiment. This system is intended to help filter out inauthentic reviews, ensuring that the films recognized with the “Verified Hot” badge have truly resonated with legitimate audiences.
Recognizing Popular Recent Releases
Some of the summer’s biggest films are among the first to receive the “Verified Hot” badge, reflecting their positive reception by verified audiences. Movies such as “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Twisters,” “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “It Ends with Us,” and “Inside Out 2” have achieved the high audience scores necessary to earn this new recognition.
Retroactive Application of the Badge
Rotten Tomatoes will not only apply the “Verified Hot” badge to new releases but also to over 200 films with verified audience scores of 90% or higher since May 2019, when the verified audience ratings feature was introduced. This means that popular films from recent years, such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Color Purple,” “Parasite,” “Oppenheimer,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” will also be recognized.
Enhancing Audience Scoring Accuracy
Alongside the introduction of the “Verified Hot” badge, Rotten Tomatoes is making updates to its audience scoring system. These changes aim to provide a clearer picture of both fan and critic sentiment, which the company hopes will help moviegoers make informed decisions based on accurate and trustworthy ratings.
