Courteney Cox, best known for her role as Monica Geller on “Friends,” has delighted fans with a nostalgic throwback on TikTok. Cox recreated her famous dance from Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 “Dancing in the Dark” music video, joining a popular social media trend that encourages parents to showcase their ’80s dance styles.
In her TikTok video, Cox starts dancing to Bronski Beat’s 1984 hit “Smalltown Boy,” which is frequently used in this TikTok trend. As the song plays, she appears somewhat hesitant, but then she surprises viewers by removing her hoodie to reveal a Springsteen t-shirt reminiscent of the one she wore in the original video. The music shifts, and Cox energetically re-enacts her iconic dance.
Back in 1984, a 20-year-old Courteney Cox was cast by director Brian De Palma to appear in Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” video. The video was filmed during the opening night of Springsteen’s Born in the USA Tour in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Cox’s role involved being pulled from the audience to dance on stage with Springsteen, a moment that has since become legendary in music video history.
In a 2017 interview on Off Camera, Cox reflected on the experience, revealing her initial reluctance. She shared that she and other actresses filmed a preparatory scene, though only one would be chosen to go on stage with Springsteen. “I didn’t want to dance in front of 30,000 people,” she admitted. “It was a full concert, and we did the song twice, back to back.”
At that time, Cox had only a couple of days of acting experience on the soap opera “As the World Turns.” The “Dancing in the Dark” video played a crucial role in launching her career, eventually leading to her breakout role on “Friends,” which aired from 1994 to 2004.
Cox’s recent TikTok recreation is a delightful nod to her past and a celebration of 1980s pop culture. Fans have warmly received the video, enjoying the blend of nostalgia and Cox’s enduring charm.
