Jake Gyllenhaal made a memorable appearance on “Saturday Night Live” with a darkly comedic take on “Scooby-Doo.” In the sketch titled “Scooby-Doo and the Mystery of the Shadow Phantom,” Gyllenhaal played Fred, with Sabrina Carpenter as Daphne, Sarah Sherman as Velma, and Mikey Day as Shaggy. The skit starts off in familiar “Scooby-Doo” territory with the gang investigating a haunted mansion but quickly veers into unexpected horror.
The first shocking moment comes when Fred decides Old Man Franklin, portrayed by James Austin Johnson, isn’t who he claims to be. Fred gruesomely peels off Franklin’s face, revealing a bloody skull, causing chaos among the gang. The animated Scooby-Doo then takes it up a notch by eating the discarded skin.
The sketch doesn’t stop there. Shaggy gets his arm caught in a rotating bookshelf, Velma loses her head, and Kenan Thompson, as a police officer, meets a grisly fate at Fred’s hands to ensure there are no witnesses.
In a final twist, the entire skit is revealed to be a commercial for Apple Face ID, ending with the punchline, “Never Get Ripped Off Again.”
