Netflix Secures Rights to Live-Action ‘Scooby-Doo’ Series

NOTE: This article is 5 months old and may not include the most recent information.

Netflix has recently acquired the rights to a new live-action series based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, ‘Scooby-Doo!’. The project, which will be a modern reimagining of the beloved franchise, comes from Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

The series, titled ‘Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series’, will be written by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who previously worked together on the live-action adaptation of ‘Cowboy Bebop’. The show will feature the iconic mystery-solving gang – Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and their talking Great Dane, Scooby-Doo – as they navigate new adventures in a contemporary setting.

Sources indicate that Netflix has made a substantial commitment to the project, offering a script-to-series deal that demonstrates their faith in the show’s potential. The series will be executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman from Berlanti Productions, alongside Appelbaum, Rosenberg, André Nemec, and Jeff Pinkner from Midnight Radio.

Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television have a strong relationship with Netflix, having recently released the comic book adaptation ‘Dead Boy Detectives’, which quickly climbed to the top of the streaming platform’s U.S. series list. The production companies are also responsible for the hit series ‘You’ and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ on Netflix.

The ‘Scooby-Doo!’ franchise has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1969, with numerous animated series, spin-offs, and two live-action films released in 2002 and 2004. The most recent addition to the franchise is ‘Velma’, an adult-oriented animated series from Mindy Kaling, which has just concluded its second season on Max.

As the project moves into development, fans of the ‘Scooby-Doo!’ franchise can anticipate a fresh, modern take on the beloved characters and their mystery-solving adventures. With the combined expertise of Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and the writing team of Appelbaum and Rosenberg, ‘Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series’ promises to be an exciting addition to Netflix’s lineup.
