Jodie Sweetin today expressed disappointment that her upcoming film “Craft Me a Romance” will air on Great American Family. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Sweetin said she was unaware the independent rom-com she filmed over a year ago had been sold to the cable channel.
Great American Family made headlines last November when Sweetin’s former Full House co-star Candace Cameron Bure said in an interview that “traditional marriage” would be the focus of content on the channel. This contrasted with Hallmark Channel, where Cameron Bure previously starred in numerous Christmas movies, having started to feature LGBTQ characters.
In her statement today, Sweetin shared that she was “very surprised to learn by reading about it in the press yesterday that the independent film I worked on over a year ago was sold to Great American Family.”
Sweetin went on to say, “I am disappointed, but in keeping with my mission of supporting the LGBTQ+ family, any potential or future money made from this sale will be donated to LGBTQ+ organizations.”
Cameron Bure had announced her deal with Great American Media, Great American Family’s parent company, in April 2022. She said the company shared her vision of “wholesome content for an audience who wants to watch programming for and with the whole family.”
Meanwhile, Hallmark Channel made history in December 2022 by airing “The Holiday Sitter”, its first holiday romance centered on an LGBTQ couple. Another Hallmark actor, Luke Macfarlane, recently applauded the channel’s efforts to increase diversity in its programming and casts.
It remains to be seen how “Craft Me a Romance” will be received when it premieres on Great American Family on September 16. But Sweetin’s remarks today make it clear she does not condone any exclusion of LGBTQ stories or characters.
