CinemaCon attendees got a thrilling sneak peek of the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Sony showcased a teaser that placed the spotlight on Mckenna Grace, who captivated audiences as Phoebe in the previous film. Grace was seen donning the iconic Ghostbusters uniform alongside co-stars Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon.
The upcoming film is set in the bustling heart of New York City, with the Ghostbusters team making their home in the legendary firehouse. Jason Reitman, the director of Afterlife, returns to write the screenplay, while his co-writer, Gil Kenan, takes over directing duties.
The sequel will feature a mix of returning cast members, including Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor, and franchise newcomers Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind. The film holds special significance, as it is the first since the passing of Ivan Reitman, the original Ghostbusters director and father of Jason Reitman. The father-son duo worked closely together on Afterlife, with Ivan serving as a producer.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife managed to earn an impressive $204 million at the box office, despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic on the theatrical landscape. The new sequel will also see the return of original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, who has already been confirmed to be a part of the film.
Jason Reitman shared a touching memory of screening Afterlife at CinemaCon two years ago with his late father, Ivan, in attendance. It was the first time the pair watched the movie together with an audience, and Reitman recalls his father’s candid feedback during the screening, emphasizing the close bond they shared throughout the filmmaking process.
