The wait is finally over! After years of development delays, Lionsgate has officially confirmed that the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing is moving forward. Original star Jennifer Grey is officially signed on to return as Frances “Baby” Houseman, and as of this week, the studio has finally assembled the “super team” to bring the project to life.
According to major industry trades like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, production is slated to begin later in 2026. The project has undergone significant creative shifts to ensure it lives up to the original’s massive legacy. The film is now being produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, the powerhouses behind The Hunger Games franchise.
Taking over the script is Kim Rosenstock, the 2025 Humanitas Prize winner known for her work on Only Murders in the Building. While Jonathan Levine was originally set to direct, he has moved into an executive producer role alongside Grey, with a new director expected to be named shortly.
Jennifer Grey shared her excitement in a statement on Tuesday, admitting that it took time to find the right people to “be entrusted to build on the legacy.” She noted that the role of Baby has held a “deep and meaningful place” in her heart for decades, and the film will explore where Baby is years after that fateful summer at Kellerman’s. “I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over,” Grey added.
While specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, Lionsgate Chairman Adam Fogelson confirmed the story will return to the iconic Kellerman’s resort. The film is expected to bridge the gap between original fans and a new generation, likely positioning Baby as a mentor figure. Crucially, Grey has emphasized that the film will not try to replace or replicate the chemistry she had with the late Patrick Swayze, but will instead honor the memory of Johnny Castle while introducing new music and romance.
With production starting in the coming months, fans can finally look forward to seeing Baby back on the dance floor. Stay tuned to Trevor Decker News for casting updates as they break!
