The buzz surrounding IFC’s upcoming horror release Good Boy has quickly grown into a full-fledged phenomenon. Originally slated for a limited theatrical debut, the film will now receive a wider rollout beginning October 3 after its trailer surpassed one million views within days of its August 18 release.

Running just 72 minutes, Good Boy offers a unique twist on horror storytelling by presenting the narrative through the eyes of a family dog. After moving with his owner Todd to a remote home, the loyal pet begins to sense supernatural activity lurking in the shadows and must step up to protect the person he loves most.

Directed by Ben Leonberg and co-written with Alex Cannon, Good Boy first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March, where it was met with positive early reviews. The growing online interest has even sparked a surge in searches for “Does the dog in Good Boy die,” underscoring just how deeply viewers are connecting with the film’s unusual perspective.

The decision to expand comes on the heels of IFC’s strong 2024 slate, which included the worldwide horror hit I Saw the Devil ($16.8 million) and the Oscar-nominated animated feature Memoir of a Snail ($7.6 million). With horror’s continued dominance at the box office this year — titles like Zach Cregger’s Weapons crossing $100 million domestically, Sinners pulling in $365 million globally, and 28 Years Later earning $150 million — industry watchers are keeping a close eye on Good Boy’s potential breakout.

If recent trends hold true, originality may once again be the winning formula. And with a story told from man’s best friend’s point of view, Good Boy is already carving out a place as one of the most distinctive horror releases of the season.
