Mel Gibson’s long-anticipated follow-up to The Passion of the Christ is officially moving forward—and it’s coming to theaters in two parts. Lionsgate has confirmed that The Resurrection of the Christ Part One will debut on Good Friday, March 26, 2027. Part Two will follow 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.

This ambitious two-part release marks Gibson’s return to the biblical epic genre that helped define his directing career. The Passion of the Christ, released in 2004, opened to $83 million and ultimately earned $370 million in North America and over $610 million worldwide—making it one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever.

The new films will be produced by Gibson alongside Bruce Davey through their company, Icon Productions.

Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, praised the project as “the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation,” calling it “an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless.” He also spoke to his longstanding relationship with Gibson and Davey, noting the significance of reuniting for a project of this scale.

Gibson echoed the excitement, pointing to Lionsgate’s “brave, innovative spirit” and expressing confidence in the team’s ability to handle the release with “clever ingenuity, passion and ambition.”
