Craig Conover, best known to audiences as a star of the long-running Bravo series Southern Charm, is stepping into scripted film work with a role in the indie dramedy Caroline Fletcher from director Ellyn Vander Wyden. The film has wrapped production in Massachusetts and brings together a cast that also includes Schitt’s Creek actor Chris Elliott and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Caroline Aaron, along with Drew Van Acker and Katrina Bowden, according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter.
The real anchor of the film, though, is newcomer Kayla Anjali, who takes on the title role. Screenwriter Daniel Blum built the story around a young girl, just eleven years old, who has spent her life scraping by in a working class world where petty crime is simply a fact of life, and who has learned that conning people is the only way she knows how to get by. When her mother is arrested and a local bully threatens what’s left of her family, she pulls off the most ambitious scam of her young life. Producer Sunil Perkash said the film is “anchored by a remarkable breakout performance from Kayla Anjali,” a striking vote of confidence for a first time film actor to be handed the emotional center of an ensemble that also includes veteran names like Elliott and Aaron.
Foundry Pictures founder Rob Goodrich is producing alongside Perkash, whose credits include Salt and Enchanted, along with Vander Wyden and Blum. Goodrich said he was struck by the honesty of Blum’s writing from the moment he read the script, and that it finds humor, heartbreak and hope within the same moment while creating characters who feel authentic and unforgettable.
No release date or festival plans have been announced yet, but if Perkash’s praise is any indication, Kayla Anjali is a name worth remembering well before Caroline Fletcher actually hits a screen. TDN will be keeping an eye on where this one turns up next.
