Last week, we reported that Netflix had announced a July 9 premiere date for its Little House on the Prairie reboot and had already renewed the series for a second season. The streamer released a promotional image alongside that announcement, but fans taking a closer look are now picking up on a detail that deserves its own spotlight: a zoomed-in view of the photo reveals our first real look at the two young actors playing Laura and Mary Ingalls.
The full image shows a covered wagon pulled by two dark horses crossing an open prairie landscape, tall golden grass in the foreground and a treeline of early-autumn foliage behind. Walking alongside the wagon are the Ingalls girls in period pioneer dress, the image carrying a cinematic quality that signals a production with real ambition behind it.
Zoom in, however, and the frame belongs to Alice Halsey and Skywalker Hughes. Halsey, the 11-year-old actor known to audiences from her role as Brie Larson’s daughter in Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry, appears as Laura in a dark brown dress and wide-brimmed hat. Hughes, who plays the older and more reserved Mary, is in a blue calico dress and white bonnet, her hair loose in the wind. Even in a single frame, the contrast between the two characters reads clearly.
Netflix has described Laura as a disruptor who questions authority and Mary as her rule-following polar opposite, a dynamic that Wilder’s readers will know well. It is a small but telling first glimpse, and with a premiere now set for July 9, fans will not have to wait much longer for the full picture.
